Hapag-Lloyd organizes transport

Parts of the Wall for the United Nations

Pieces of the Berlin Wall are to be displayed in front of the United Nations building in New York. The three segments were dispatched to "Big Apple" today.

The three 3.6 metre high sections each weighing 2.8 tonnes, featuring for instance an illustration of two people embracing one another over the Wall, will serve as a symbol of freedom in front of the UN in New York. The pieces of the Wall are a gift by Germany to the world organization. They were officially presented by the president of the German parliament Wolfgang Thierse to the UN general secretary Kofi Annan when he visited Berlin this July.

Today the first of the three parts of the Wall was carefully lifted by mobile crane and positioned in a Hapag-Lloyd container in Berlin-Wedding. This was followed by the other two sections. They were then carefully lashed for transport by road to Hamburg, where the container will be loaded on to the "Heidelberg Express" of Hapag-Lloyd Container Line on August 15th. Eleven days later, the parts of the Wall will arrive in New York and be taken from the port to the UN building.

The entire transport is being organized by Hapag-Lloyd in cooperation with the forwarders Kühne & Nagel.

The sections of the Wall will probably be set up in late August in the garden of the United Nations in the immediate vicinity of the East River for viewing by visitors.
